Eddie Jones has edged closer to being appointed the next England head coach after holding talks with the Rugby Football Union.
Fifty-five-year-old Australian Jones coached Japan in the Rugby World Cup and his minnow Japanese side beat two time champions South Africa.
Jones is understood to be interested in the job but he has recently signed with Super Rugby side the Stormers in Cape Town South Africa and would need a release after signing a “long-term” contract with them.
Reports in South Africa are that Jones has flown from Cape Town to London and has met with the RFU and an announcement could be made on Friday.
Jones coached Australia to the 2003 Rugby World Cup final and also won a World Cup winners medal in 2007 as an assistant coach with the Springboks.
In 2007 he worked under South African Jake White who is also under consideration for the role but is not on the top of the RFU’s list of candidates.
England were knocked out of the Rugby World Cup at the pool stage which led to the then head coach Stuart Lancaster’s resignation last week.
